Why the control matters
Coverage does not end when the primary assistant logs back in. Decisions, promises, access, calendar changes, and temporary workarounds created during leave must be reconciled into authoritative records.
Build the record
Use a return queue containing items completed, decisions awaiting action, changed commitments, unresolved exceptions, temporary permissions, sensitive matters requiring direct handoff, and records that need cleanup.
Run the workflow
The backup and returning assistant review by consequence and deadline, not message volume. Confirm which owner accepted each handoff. Do not reopen completed work solely because the primary assistant would have handled it differently.
Review the evidence
Reconcile the calendar, action register, vendor or travel changes, delegated inbox rules, document versions, and executive commitments. Remove temporary forwarding and access only after confirming that essential records moved to the correct owner.
Close the loop
Close the coverage window with a short executive summary: material decisions, exceptions, upcoming risks, and process improvements. Preserve the coverage log under policy and remove unnecessary private copies.
Authority and limitations
Reconcile the Executive Office After an Assistant Returns From Leave is an operating workflow, not legal, financial, security, employment, travel, or governance advice. The executive office should approve authority, information handling, retention, and exception ownership before using it.
